why buckwheat?
Buckwheat is not only eco-friendly, but it is beneficial to your health by increasing the quality of your sleep. Buckwheat is a flower that is naturally organic. This type of plant is grown without pesticides or herbicides because it is not bothered by pests and is therefore, hypo-allergenic. Buckwheat does not attract dust mites, which is perfect for those of you with allergies. As you move in your sleep, the buckwheat pillow conforms to your head and neck, adjusting and supporting you where and when you need it throughout the night. Medical professionals often recommend these types of pillows to their patients suffering from headaches, back and neck pain, sleeplessness, snoring, and so on. These pillows do not conduct heat. Your head will remain your normal body temperature throughout the night. This is especially important during those warmer months. It may take a little getting used to at first, but once you are, you will never be able to sleep with another type of pillow again.
why hemp?
Hemp is one of the most environmentally friendly crops on Earth. The plant requires little water to grow and because it grows thick and tall, the deep roots actually aerate the soil. This tall plant shades the ground and eliminates competeing weeds, which reduces the need for fertilizers. Furthermore, hemp is resistant to molds and pests and in that sense, is naturally organic. Cotton, on the other hand, is extremely susceptible to pests and utilizes over 275 million pounds of pesticides per year! The amount of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers used actually contaminates the groundwater and is harmful for those that live near cotton crops. In fact, 15,000 lakes in the United States are so contaminated that nothing can live in them! On top of that, the amount of water that is used to maintain a cotton crop is immense. Overall cotton is a high-maintenance crop. When comparing the two types of materials, there is no question that hemp is the best choice for the environment and agriculture itself, but it is also the better choice for quality. Hemp is the most durable fabric known to man. It is flame retardant, not affected by UV rays, and is a very breathable fabric. The list goes on. Hemp is the best choice for the environment...is it the best choice for you?
why kapok?
Kapok is a golden silky fiber that is harvested from seed pods of the kapok tree. Kapok trees are found in rainforests. This plant gets its nutrients from the air, which creates fine air-filled tubes of golden silky fiber. Therefore, chemicals are not needed for this crop. The material itself is extremely soft, hypo-allergenic, and environmentally friendly. It is a breathable material which allows air circulation and has many healthful benefits. It can be reused for generations, without developing mold or decaying. We use this material in place of cotton batting because it is not only more comfortable, but it is entirely eco-friendly.

cleaning instructions
If you need to wash your buckwheat pillow, be sure to remove the hulls from the hemp case and wash the case in cold water then hang dry. It is very important that you do not wash the hulls themselves as they would retain moisture and could develop mold spores. A way that you can sanitize, freshen, and deodorize your hulls is by placing the buckwheat in direct sunlight for two hours. Because buckwheat is a natural product, it is possible for the hulls to stain the case. However, if you follow these Cleaning Instructions on a regular basis, these effects should be minimal.
When you need to wash your kapok pillow, we recommend that you spot clean or dry clean. If you must wash the case, you may remove the kapok filling and wash the case in cold water, then hang dry.
